Akoya Pearls

Akoya pearls produced in the Pinctada fucata martensii and Pinctada fucata chemnitzii(akoya oysters) primarily in Japan, China, Vietnam, South Korea and Australia.

the akoya oysters are the smallest pearl-producing oysters and produce mostly round and near-round pearls ranging in size from about 2mm - 11mm.

Akoya pearls are considered the classic pearl and are renowned for their luster. They are generally white or cream colored, with overtone colors of rose, silver, or cream.

BIWA PEARLS

Biwa pearls are produced at lake Biwa, Japan using freshwater clams. They are irregular in shape but have good color and luster. A small square of mother of pearl in inserted into the clam. These pearls require three years to produce good results.

KESHI PEARL

Keshi pearls are a non-beaded pearl formed by accident as a by-product of a pearl culturing operation. Keshi may form in either saltwater or freshwater pearls.

Keshi pearls vary in their shapes, come in a wide variety of colors, and tend to have high luster.

Keshi pearls are formed when the oyster rejects and spits out the implanted nucleus before the culturing process is complete and forms separate pearl sacs without nuclei. These pearl sacs eventually produce pearls without a nucleus - the keshi pearl.
South Sea pearls are produced by the the silver-lipped and the gold-lipped Pinctada maxima mollusk in areas throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans, primarily in Australia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Myanmar.

These Pinctada maxima oysters grow up to 12 inches in diameter and produce an array of colors - white, silver, and golden.

South Sea Pearls are among the largest harvested cultured pearls in the world and range in sizes from 9mm - 20mm. South Sea pearls grow to large sizes because the large size of the Pinctada maxima, the size of the implanted bead, the length of time the pearl is left to grow in the oyster, and the oyster’s environment.
